Vancouver Island Camping
The following Vancouver Island camping descriptions are excerpts from Camp Free in B.C. The book rates each of these campgrounds "destination," meaning the site and the scenery are superior, the recreation is excellent and varied. If you're a camper, these Vancouver Island campgrounds are worthy of precious vacation time:
Sitka Spruce Beach
For tenters only, this small campground is on a beach at the south end of McCreight Lake. The view north is stirring. Behind the beach is a lovely hemlock-and-cedar forest. Vancouver Island camping at its best.
Nimpkish Lake
Nimpkish Lake, beneath sweeping mountainsides, is stunning. It has two campgrounds just off the highway. Both are ideal for a convenient overnight stop or a multi-day retreat. Strong, dependable winds make this a fine boardsailing lake. You can also just sit on the beach and lose yourself in the scenery. Campgrounds like these at Nimpkish Lake are what make Vancouver Island camping famous.
Marble River
Marble River campground is provincial-park quality. Reached via paved road, it's on a spirited river, at the north end of Alice Lake, in a serene forest. Several campsites line the riverbank. Others are well away from the campground road, with privacy created by trees and bushes. The river is audible at most sites, even if it's not visible. Shade is abundant. Large, grassy areas at many sites are great for pitching your tent on, or curling your toes in. This is as attractive as any Vancouver island camping option. Even on the Mainland, you won't find a more appealing campground.
Camp Free in B.C. offers precise directions to these and hundreds more free campgrounds on Vancouver Island and throughout mainland British Columbia.
